The governing body for the sport of figure skating in South Africa comprising of 8 skating Provinces of which Western Province has the largest membership.

Once the skater has mastered the basics of skating, usually through an affiliated club, they are ready for professional coaching.  SAFSA has to authorize the appointment of all figure coaches throughout the country to ensure that a standard is maintained and proper control enforced.

An official SAFSA test structure is in place, which all skaters wishing to further their accomplishment in the sport have to do.  Entry levels to competitions are based on these tests and the Provincial technical committee does selections.

SAFSA is responsible for running 3 Inter-Provincial, (Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu and WP), one National Championships (hosted by alternating Provinces) and a Provincial championship per year.  All other competitions also fall under SAFSA jurisdiction.

There are 4 divisions of the sport namely, Solo, Pairs, Dance and Synchronized Team skating.

Solo skating is one skater performing to music and being judged on their ability to master the difficult jumps and spins required.

Pairs and Dance are performed as a couple, pairs being the daring manoeuvres performed by the man lifting the lady high over his head, while skating at speed, while dance is more sedate and performed to ballroom style dancing on the ice.

Synchronized team skating consists of a team of 16 skaters with up to 4 alternates performing synchronized moves on the ice to music.

Participating in the sport of figure skating opens many doors, and our WP skaters are regularly selected to participate internationally and in the World Championships and are well travelled.

Skaters can then elect to coach as a profession, or join one of the travelling ice show like Holiday on Ice and earn a living while seeing the world.

Any further information on the sport can be obtained from WP chairman Dawn van der Riet: 083 303 4907 Email: safsawp at icerink
